Miniature Sicilian
Donkeys are native to the Mediterranian islands of Sicily
and Sardinia (see map at right).
Most Miniature Donkeys are
grey-dun with the characteristic "cross", a dark
stripe that runs across their shoulders. They also come in
darker shades of grey, brown, black, sorrel, and spotted.
Usually they have light tan markings around their muzzle and
eyes, known as "points", however, some have dark
points.
They weight ranges from 200
to 350 pounds. They stand 32 inches to 34 inches at the withers,
with a maximum height of 36 inches. |

Male donkeys are referred to as "jacks", female donkeys are
"jennets", and baby donkeys are called "foals". |

Miniature
Sicilian Donkeys live from 25 to 35 years. |

 |
After a gestation
period of 11 to 13 months, the jennet gives birth to a single foal.
Babies average 20 to 30 pounds at birth. Foals are up and nursing
within 30 minutes and are weaned at 5 to 6 months of age. Jennets
are extremely devoted mothers, and are also protective and tolerant
of other foals in the herd. |

an estrus cycle every 18 to 21 days throughout most of the year. |
