Let us give you ideas about how to use the Zoo to help your students meet many Colorado Model Content
Standards for science, reading, writing, geography, and math. Zoo programs can help test scores, too.
Programs are pre-approved as field trips by Pueblo City Schools and District 70.

Pre-Kindergarten
Animal Encounters (Sci. 1.1, 1.2, 3.1)
Observe small animals up close. This 20-minute program nurtures students’ curiosity. It can be
presented at the school or at the Zoo
Kindergarten
Animal Encounters (Sci. 1.1, 1.2, 3.1)
Observe small animals up close and learn how their physical characteristics help them survive.
This 30-minute program can be presented at the school or at the Zoo.
1st Grade
Animal Coats and Colors (Sci. 1.1, 1.2, 3.1, 3.4)
Learn how animals are “dressed” for survival. This 45-minute program challenges students’
observation skills. It can be presented at the school or in the Zoo classroom.
Amazing Arthropods (Sci. 1.1, 1.2, 3.1, 3.2, 3.4, 3.5)
Observe insects and their relatives up close. This 45-minute program addresses diversity,
adaptations, social behavior, and common human misconceptions. It can be presented at the
school or in the Zoo classroom.

Spend 30 minutes at the Zoo’s penguin exhibit. Observe them swimming, diving, walking, and
playing, and discuss their adaptations for a watery lifestyle.

2nd Grade
Animal Babies (Sci. 1.1, 1.2, 3.1, 3.2, 3.4)
Discover the great variety of babies in the Animal Kingdom and the similarities and differences
in their growth and development. This 45 to 60-minute program can be presented at the school
or in the Zoo classroom.
Amazing Arthropods (Sci. 1.1, 1.2, 3.1, 3.2, 3.5)
This 60-minute program addresses diversity, adaptations, social behavior and common
misconceptions about insects and their relatives. It can be presented at the school or in the Zoo
classroom.
* The Rainforest (Sci. 1.1, 1.2, 3.1,; Geo. 1.1, 2.1, 5.1)
Spend 30 minutes in the Zoo classroom and 30 minutes exploring Pueblo Zoo’s own rainforest
habitat. Compare and contrast habitats with those of penguins and naked mole rats.

3rd Grade
Food Chains - African Savannah (Sci. 3.1, 3.2, 3.4, 3.8)
Follow the movement of energy through African Savannah food chains and learn about animals’
adaptations for survival. This 60-minute program can be presented at the school or in the Zoo
classroom.
Amazing Arthropods (Sci. 3.1, 3.5, 3.8)
Observe insects and their relatives up close, learn about diversity, social behavior, and common
human misconceptions. This 60-minute program can be presented at the school or in the Zoo
classroom.

Spend 30 minutes in the Zoo classroom learning about penguins, where they are found, and how
humans are impacting their habitat and survival. Then spend 30 minutes in the Zoo’s penguin
exhibit.

Spend 60 minutes in a hands-on activity in the Zoo classroom learning the unique survival
characteristics of Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds, and Mammals, then take a self-guided tour
of the Zoo.

4th & 5th Grade
Food Chains - Colorado Animals (Sci. 3.1, 3.2, 3.4, 3.8; Geo 3.2)
Follow the movement of energy through Colorado food chains. The classroom portion of this
program (approx. l hour in length) can be presented in the school classroom prior to the Zoo
visit or in the Zoo classroom on the day of the Zoo visit (optional).
Vertebrates and Their Adaptations for Survival (Sci. 3.1, 3.5, 3.8)
(A 5-part weekly program. Parts 1-4 can be presented at the school or in the Zoo classroom.)
Part 1: Amphibians -- A 45-minute classroom program
Part 2: Reptiles -- A 45-minute classroom program
Part 3: Birds -- A 45-minute classroom program
Part 4: Mammals -- A 60-minute classroom program
Part 5: Zoo Tour* -- A 90-minute guided Zoo Tour

5th Grade
Only
Animals in Winter (A 2-part program offered in January and February only.) (Sci. 3.1, 4.4., 4.9)
A 1-hour introduction at the school encourages students to think about where Zoo animals come
from and what they might need to survive winter in Pueblo. This is followed by a 4-hour
program at the Zoo that includes a behind-the-scenes Zoo tour

3rd - 5th Grade
Available on special request, dependent upon Docent availability:
Bats Beyond Belief, Otter Antics, Owls of Colorado, and Wolves
- Plan your visit during the September
through March period, when the Zoo is less
crowded.
- Plan on groups of no more than 30 students
per program.
- Bring at least one adult per ten students.
- Work with students beforehand to help them
understand the need to behave with respect
toward Zoo animals, whose homes they are
visiting.
- Download program packet of pre- and
post-visit activities by clicking on the program titles above.
- Have students wear sturdy shoes and
clothing appropriate for the weather.
- Plan to monitor students’ shopping time, if
they will be visiting the Gift Shop.
- All visitors must pay as a group
to receive group rate.
- Admission fees due on day of visit.
- Invoicing requires prior approval and
will entail a billing fee.
