How to store ideas for novels

Options for storing ideas:

A) Sketches.

While the suit is going, write down as much "live" text as possible - chapters, scenes, episodes. And write them down without thinking, without caring about descriptions and semantic content. The function of such sketches is to preserve the emotional state. So that when you reread them, you'll be inspired by the idea even years later.

B) Short stories "based on motifs.

When there is absolutely no time neither for the novel, nor for reflection, it makes sense to compress a novel idea into a short story and write it down quickly. Both the idea and the emotion will be preserved. And if there is no time, the idea will not hang by a rock on your neck - it is "attached" in its own way, and the story is easier to process and finish than the novel.

B) A synopsis or summary of the story.

The most useful method. Over time, professional essay editing plot details are forgotten, and they are more important than the names of characters or locations. If the idea has come up and unfolded for the novel, the key points - backstory, conflict and intrigue, pivotal episodes and plot turning points - can be written down in a retelling. Either in one text, or separately the essence of the conflict, the essence of intrigue, the course of the plot, etc.

D) Cheat sheets and notes - on the characters, the magic system, the history of the world, etc. They are also lists of characters and locations, maps, episode outlines - anything that has come up, thought about, and is sure to come in handy.

You can also consider co-authoring - sharing an idea. And let someone who lacks ideas, but has free time and desire, writes, and you - read, suggest, advise, come up with.

How to select information, use and store it, everyone decides for himself. The main thing - yes, to make it convenient for you. But order in the materials, of course, is desirable.

Creative chaos and chaos is a stereotype, and it is convenient only for those who have a lot of time to endlessly rummage through the creative "stash" (or just lazy to write, and hours of searching for some important phrase justifies this laziness). And people busy can not afford to spend half a day looking for an old thought or sketch. And it is better to spend a day once a month to put things in order, and then write in peace, having at hand what you need, than to lose precious time each time searching for an extremely important scene.

And, by the way, order on your desk and in your creative archives is also order in your thoughts. Arranging ideas in folders, you lay out on the shelves and thoughts. And working after that is much calmer and easier.
