North American River Otter update

July 15, 2014

It is with great sadness that the Pueblo Zoo announces the unexpected death of one of the North American river otter pups born March 13, 2014.  One of the two females, Saga, was found dead last week.

The Zoo did not immediately release an announcement as they conducted tests to look formore answers to find a preliminary cause.

The Zoo’s veterinary team took tissue and blood samples and in working with the clinical veterinary pathologists at CSU in Fort Collins determinedtoday that the cause of death was encephalitis, an acute inflammation of the brain.  The Zoo continues to work with the CSU team to probe deeper into possible root causes and any potential future implications.  The zookeeper staff continues to monitor the otter family, however, we are cautiously optimistic that this an isolated event.  The other two pups seem happy and healthy and can be seen on exhibit in rotation with the adult otters.
