African lion cub born at Pueblo Zoo
Pueblo Zoo is thrilled to announce the birth of a male African lion cub to Mashavu, a 9-year-old female, and Taz Jahari, a 13-year-old male. The cub was born January 13, 2016 and appears to be thriving under the care of his mother, weighing in at nine pounds at his first vet checkup. This is the first cub born to Mashavu. Taz sired three other cubs in 2006.
Zoo staff set up a closed circuit camera system to monitor Mashavu and her cub in an indoor nesting location and as of now is not visible to the public. Lion keeper contacts have been kept to a minimum as to not disturb mother and baby bonding. Taz has also been distanced from mom and baby until keepers feel the family can be introduced safely.
We are hoping to introduce the cub into the lion exhibit sometime in mid-April for all to see.
